Passing a brand new F-150 uphill with the top down was sooooo gratifying. An ambulance driver told me I was being bad ass and I got pulled over because I had a head light out.

No I don’t have a problem with AWD, but loosely quoting Ed, Edd, and Eddy is entertaining to me. I’m gonna drink some Moonshine now.

I had a smug moment watching a Durango with bald all-seasons digging every inch of snow from under his vehicle as I drove past in the Fiat.

Then I ran over a chunk of “snow” that was actually a giant ice cube and spent the rest of my drive to work wondering if I’d done permanent damage.

There’s a student controlled snapchat account that most people follow. Every time it snows there are videos of people wrecking in the snow. And they’re wrecking in cars that everyone would say is “better” in the snow then mine. But here I am waiting for snow to gather on the road, to go out driving.

What I really like tho, is snow tires and AWD

That would be ideal but.....getting people to understand that is basically impossible. I’ve tried

People seem to think some CARS are good or bad in snow, and don’t understand that it’s the tires that really matter. Some people actually think all tires are created equal.

Yeah people ask me how I’m able to drive around and I’m like “I have winter tires!” and EVERY SINGLE TIME I get this blank look like I just told them the Earth is pyramid shaped. This isn’t witchcraft pleabs. I don’t even bother trying to tell them my car has a LSD that helps tremendously

I always wonder about the interior of your car. Seems to me you must be dealing with a lot of moisture inside. I can imagine a freeze/thaw cycle where the heat thaws the moisture already in there and the new snow flurries that come inside while you’re driving which then soak the interior and refreeze when the car is off. Then I have to wonder about the effectiveness of the defrost/defog when the top is up and it’s having to deal with all the extra moisture.

Tell me how you are dealing with it. What’s going to happen in the spring when the interior is a soggy mess? Will you have additional rust issues? Inquiring minds want to know more!

Its especially difficult to explain to older people who saw the invention of “all season tires” as we have today. All season tires today are 1000X better than “winter” tires of 30-40 years ago, just because tire technology has progressed so much. I have tried explaining to my parents why I had three sets of wheels with tires for my Miata and they just thought I was fucking insane. To them, winter tires were a thing of the past and that now cars just had “tires”.

When dealing with any liquid falling from the sky, you can drive a Miata with the top down and not get drenched (assuming you are going fast enough). This is especially true for snow since it is falling much slower and even when some does get in, you can brush it out before it melts into water. Assuming you dont leave the car parked out in the rain with the top down, its really a nonissue.

As for defogging though, Miatas are pretty bad at that. Here in California I just park my Miata outside with the top down all the time. Sometimes leaving work though the damn windshield is all sorts of foggy until the car gets up to temperature and can clear it with some heat. Having the top up helps a little but its still not very good in comparison to a hard roofed car.

I’ve seen the videos. Going fast, he is not.

The seats are a fake leather vinyl so those I can just scoop off any snow and wipe down. Same with any snow that collects on the plastic center console piece. The only other places snow collects is what little carpet is exposed behind the seats and parcel shelf, and the underside of the soft top. Snow on the carpet I’ll just absorb what I can with a rag. Snow on the underside of soft top can just be wiped off since it’s vinyl. I’m not really worried about rust or anything. It’s not really that much moisture and Im driving with the top up and heat on far more than I am like this.

I’ve driven in rain heavy enough with the top down that I wished I had interior windshield wipers lol. That was interesting since I was going about 70 with the wipers at full speed and stayed dry. But seeing started to become difficult because the glass on the inside was getting wet from water running over the top and had no way to clear. Only the top of my head really got wet and that was with the stock seat. Now with an aftermarket seat, i dont think I would get wet at all. But that seat is also super absorbant and sucks to get wet in any way unlike the “leather”.

The very first time I drove my car to school after buying it, was the beginning of a school year so it was perect weather. So I had the top down the whole way. With like 30 miles to go I hit a random rain storm.....and that’s when I learned that you’ll stay dry so long as your going fast enough.
